Scholastic BOGO Book Fair
Thursday and Friday (May 19 & 20) after school till 4:30

Thursday during the Middle School Concert

Your child should have brought home a permission slip for our end-of-year trip to the Minnetonka Regional Park.  If you have not seen this yet, please ask your child for it.  If you would like to chaperone, we ask that you drive separately and meet us there.  Therefore, chaperones will not need to pay the $8 fee as the permission slip indicates.  Please check the line if you intend to join us, though, so we can plan ahead.  Thanks!

Our 2-3-4 concert will be this Tuesday.  Teachers will be available to supervise beginning at 6:30.  If your family arrives before 6:30, please supervise your children in the gym until it is time to meet in our classrooms.

College t-shirts will be worn twice the week of May 23rd.  We will wear them on Monday, May 23rd as we take our final round of interims.  We will also wear them on Friday, May 27th for the OSA at 9:00 AM.

Relay For Life

Cologne Academy is again teaming with Relay for Life to raise funds to help fight cancer. We are offering a jeans day (with uniform top) for students who bring in a $3.00+ donation for Relay for Life.

Cash or checks (payable to ACS) are acceptable.

The jeans day will be Friday, May 20th.  Last fall we raised a whopping $1,795; let's see if we can do even better this spring!  Students who do not participate will be expected to be in uniform bottoms.

Thank you everyone for your support of Relay for Life!

As a reminder, there will be a CA team for Waconia's Relay for Life in August.  Sign up or support us here:  http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=74945&pg=team&team_id=2034846

Dear Parents,
Testing season is almost upon us. Your child has been working hard all year! Now is our opportunity to celebrate their academic success. Below is some information regarding the MCA’s that you might find helpful.
Testing at Cologne Academy in Math, Reading and Science will take place April 18-26th. Make up days for absences will be April 28-29th. All MCA Language Arts, Mathematics and Science tests will be taken online. Students will be using one of the chromebooks from the school lab. All tests will be given during MUM and MUR. Students, in grades 5 and 8 only, will take the science MCA during their science class. Absences should be reported to your MUM/MUR teacher so a make up time can be scheduled.
The MCA-III Mathematics tests for grades 3 – 8 are structured in 4 segments. With the exception of Segment 3, which is much shorter (and does not allow a calculator), the segments are each expected to take approximately 30 – 40 minutes but students are not timed. Students are welcome to take as much time as they need per question, and per segment.
The MCA-III Reading test for grades 3 – 8 are segmented into reading passages of various lengths, with a varying number of questions per passage. The MCA-III Science tests for grades 5 and 8 are structured similarly to the reading test, having scientific scenarios, with each scenario having a varying number of questions.
Students are given only one opportunity to take the MCA-III Mathematics, Reading, and Science tests for state reporting purposes. The OLPA (Optional Local-Purpose Assessment) was available two times for Mathematics and once for Reading. The OLPA is an optional test, similar to the MCA, and is not used for reporting purposes. Students’ OLPA scores are available to teachers for evaluation and instructional purposes, but are not reported to the state. Cologne Academy has elected to have all students in grades 3 – 8 take advantage of one OLPA Reading opportunity and two OLPA Math opportunities; these tests have all been completed.
Some things you can do to help your child to prepare for testing:
  • Plan for a good night’s sleep
  • Make sure your child eats a healthy breakfast
  • Arrive at school on time
  • Be supportive – encourage your child to do their best!
For more information on required state testing, please see the Parents section of the Minnesota Department of Education website:

For access to MCA Item Sampler questions, practice materials, and other student and parent resources, as well as individualized lessons for your child based on their past MCA scores using the Pearson Learning Locator, please see http://www.pearsonaccess.com/ You will receive a separate notification from your child’s teacher with information regarding your child’s updated Learning Locator.
General questions about the MCA’s or the Learning Locator please contact your child’s MUM or MUR teacher.
If you have any technical questions, please contact Jackie Nordick 952-466-4024.

Warmest Regards,
Cologne Academy Staff

Pennies for Patients:
This will be our third year in a row that we have supported students in our own community to survive cancer.  We will continue the tradition Feb. 29-Mar. 4.  Each grade level has a goal and your child will be educated on what they can do!  The final push will be on March 4th.  CA students have the opportunity to bring in $2 donation and in return, they will be granted permission to wear a hat.  Hats are to honor those brave kids who have battled cancer and lost their hair, but have continued to be courageous and fight.  Please join this wonderful initiative.

To make it fun, we will compete with other classes.  Bring pennies for your homeroom jar and bring silver coins to "bomb" your neighboring classrooms.  Pennies are "+" and silver coins are "-".  But all coins collected will be donated.  The winning classroom will win a party.

Lifetouch Spring Photos
Spring photo day is Wednesday, March 2nd.  These photos are optional.  If you'd like your child photographed, they may arrive at school out of uniform, but will need to change into a uniform after the photos are taken.  Order forms came home earlier this week.  You may also order online at mylifetouch.com.  Picture Day ID: MI695026Y0.

Happy Thanksgiving Week!

Tuesday, November 24thCollege T-shirt day, 1 pm OSA and Grandparent’s Day
o   Grandparents are invited to join us for our Outstanding Student Assembly at 1 pm in the Community Center gym.

o   After the assembly, grandparents are invited back to the school to spend time with their grandchildren in the classroom and visit the book fair.

o   Please note the following:
  • Parking is going to be tricky.   Those willing and able to walk to the gym/school are asked to park in the Security Bank parking lot in an effort to leave the closer parking spots for others.
  • After the assembly, students will return to the school with their class/teacher.
  • It is always helpful if the grandparents know the name of the teacher(s), so we can easily direct them to the classroom.
  • If students are leaving with their grandparents, you MUST communicate this info with the homeroom teachers PRIOR to Nov 24
  • We respectfully ask that grandparents depart the school by 3:00 pm in order to allow room for our carline and buses in the parking lot. The buses can’t maneuver through our lot when there are cars parked in each row.
  • As always, parents are welcome to join us at the OSA.  Please make every attempt to leave seating for the grandparents.   Also, in an effort to make this day special for the grandparents/students, we respectfully ask that only grandparents join us at the school afterwards.
Reading Calendars are due Tuesday, December 1st.
